Reducing Your Landfill Contribution

“Refuse what you do not need; reduce what you do need; reuse what you consume; recycle what you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse; and rot (compost) the rest.”

Let’s say Hi to trash free living!

Our current culture of consumption is quite unsustainable. We just believe in extracting the raw materials from natural spaces which requires large amount of energy and causes pollution, whether it is logging a forest, mining for minerals or drilling for oil. Processing these materials requires more energy and causes more pollution. Once they’re used, the goods are simply dumped in a landfill or destroyed in an incinerator. In present scenario the number of landfills has decreased over the years, but the size of existing landfills has increased. The ill practices of landfill management have turned them into dumping yards full of noxious gases like CO2, CH4, VOCs and other hazardous pollutants. Landfill gases can also move underground, potentially causing fires and explosions, and the liquid or leachate that accumulates in landfills can contaminate groundwater. Resulting in unfavourable environmental condition and unsustainable management of waste.

So, considering the present scenario today’s first priority should be to avoid producing waste by reducing consumption and packaging. The next best option is to recycle followed by composting organic waste. This should be followed by combusting the post-recycled waste for energy aiming at zero to landfill. We believe that this approach demonstrates the kind of responsible consumption and production is called for by UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 specifically, Target 12.5 which focuses on substantially reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

Reducing our consumption of waste is now more important than ever. The easiest way to reduce our landfill contribution is to start at the source and reduce how much waste we produce, recyclable or not. Luckily, there are many ways to get started!

One of such initiative is the Y.E.S Full Circle’s  End waste Now concept which believes in integrated waste management approach. End Waste Now works to implement circular economy solutions to maximize the use of waste as a resource back into the circular economy.

The benefits of implementing Ends Waste Now program is:

  • Reduction in environmental pollution and degradation leaving a healthier planet for all
  • Positive community and brand image
  • Helps to promote acceptance of waste as being a resource that can be reused
  • Waste reduction translates into reduced costs for organizations and municipalities

Your Small Changes can make a big difference on the environment. So, Do-It-Yourself by being mindful of your daily practices and purchasing decisions to reduce the amount of trash you contribute to landfills or contact Y.E.S Full Circle to handle your waste management with our End Waste Now Service. For more information, please contact us at info@yesfullcircle.com
